Let’s stop gloating…

Really fellow liberals, let’s stop gloating. Let’s also stop counting the chickens before they hatch.

Sure, what happened this election is remarkable and it bodes well for the future of progressive policies, but it’s hardly as many indicate, “the doom of the Republican Party”. This is all cyclical and the Republicans will have their day again, you can count on it. And when they do, if we don’t want them to treat us better than they have the last 8+ years, we have to treat them better. After all, part of why we were where we were was the unfair treatment of conservatives during the 60’s and 70’s. The Reagan Revolution was built on the angst collected during those years.

Nor ultimately do we want to snuff out the collective conservative. There is much to say for balanced viewpoints, and their viewpoints add to a more healthy and comprehensive picture. The Democratic platform today is stronger for some of the conservative ideology it has incorporated. A good idea is a good idea, whether it comes from a conservative or a liberal and ultimately it’s the sort of hubris and one sided ideology that brings the sort of financial mess our country finds itself in. In short, the detractors may be mostly wrong, but are rarely always wrong.

So let’s find a little magnanimity and humble ourselves. Let’s stop speaking the demise of those on the other side of the aisle and instead of basking in our so-called great accomplishement here, let’s just get down to the work of making this country a better place to live in. A better place to live if for both parties.
