Why I’m hesitant…

This exchange from the movie “Witness” captures one of the reasons why I am always hesitant to support, no matter how clear cut it may seem to be, instigating violence or war:

Eli Lapp: This gun of the hand is for the taking of human life. We believe it is wrong to take a life. […]

“Steve Jobs” quote

One quote stood out for me in the latest “Steve Jobs” movie, one that I think many at the top could be well served to listen to (or at least, the average person would be well served if they listened to it):

“it’s not binary: you can be decent and gifted at the same time”

The wheels are coming off the bus…

It’s not just on the right, but the left too:

Would be interesting to find out if the intercept gets money from Russia or Iran https://t.co/A6ym7Qkx6y

I don’t argue Russia might have tried to influence our election, but if they did the largely seemed to […]

Understanding racism

If you are a raging liberal like myself and want to understand how it feels to be a racist, there is an easy way. In fact, I would argue you, like the rest of us, are likely to do it regularly yourself.

Here’s what I want you to do. Imagine yourself hearing someone use the […]

Look in the mirror liberals

It sucks because at a time when we should be questioning the whole path that the “liberal” party has taken, one cannot really argue that the choice this time is really that stark. However, it is the neoliberal status-quo and our inability, or rather refusal, to offer a real solution to the suffering middle class […]

Worse than every war before?

Matt Lauer on NBC to Hillary Clinton:

“It seems, Secretary Clinton, that information is so vital when it comes to combatting terrorism, and that is why perhaps—perhaps—you hear some people say when you get a key suspect like the one who was taken into custody in Brussels last Friday, maybe you should use some enhanced […]

Want to see what a Nazi looks like?

Look in the mirror. Want to see what a Jew looks like. Look in the mirror. Want to see what the Buddha looks like? Look in the mirror. Want to see what a racist looks like? Look in the mirror. Want to see what an abolitionist looks like? Look in the mirror. Want to see […]

Tax the bastards

Teeing off my prior post, we need to forget progressive taxation as simply a moral issue (those who can afford the most, pay the most). Progressive taxes, taxes that even get seemingly punitive on the high end, should be viewed as critical to democracy itself.

Why?

In the same way that we have “separation of […]

Good Stiglitz quote…

And I think a good response to those Rand-y Galts:

“Regardless of how fast GDP grows, an economic system that fails to deliver gains for most of its citizens, and in which a rising share of the population faces increasing insecurity, is, in a fundamental sense, a failed economic system.”

From this Project Syndicate post.

The harassed…

Via my best friend we find that rats are being harassed:

“Experiments on different groups of rats of different ages showed that the most effective means of instilling depression (measured by overall listlessness) was to constantly harass young rats, and then intermittently harass them again when they got older, and that doing this is likely […]
